Magic The Gathering Stack Explained
Okay. Deep breathe. We can do this. Today we are talking near the Stack, a mysterious, notwithstanding of import, if not virtually important component, in Magic: The Gathering.
If you've followed this series so far, you created your firstMagic deck, take a basic understanding of the turn, and are gear up to proceed going. Mayhap you played a few rounds in Magic: The Gathering Arena, or tried your hand atMagic: The Gathering Online, and y'all've seen the trivial box known as the Stack, but aren't quite sure how it all resolves. Y'all're exactly where you're supposed to be.
What Is the Stack in Magic: The Gathering?
Simply put, the Stack is the in-between space when y'all play a menu from your hand before information technology hits the battlefield. When I tap my mana and play Lurrus of the Dream- Den, it enters the Stack, and priority , the ability to play spells is passed to the opponent, giving them a chance to react to my activity. If they do nothing, Lurrus of the Dream-Den finishes their journey to the battlefield and is bandage with summoning sickness. If they cull to play a counterspell, priority passes back to me. This gives me the opportunity to counter their counterspell earlier the Stack resolves. If I do, the counterspell goes abroad, and Lurrus is cast onto the battleground. If I don't, the counterspell in the Stack resolves with Lurrus of the Dream-Den unable to finish their journey to the battleground, landing in the graveyard instead.
Seems elementary enough, but it can go very complicated. One small misstep in the Stack tin can take very unintended consequences. So, let's dive a piddling more into the concept of priority.
What Is Priority?
Explaining the Stack inevitably leads to honing in on this concept of priority in Magic: The Gathering. If you lot have priority, y'all may cast a spell, keeping current context in mind. For instance, during your turn, you have priority. It'south your plow. When yous play a carte, you lot laissez passer priority over to your opponent so they may react if they accept the ways to do and then, playing an instant counterspell, for case. This does not mean y'all can bandage a beast, sorcery, or other Main Stage cards whenever you have priority. Withal, yous can use activated abilities when you have priority. This is why information technology's important to keep the current context of the situation in listen.
Okay, so at present we know the Stack is the purgatory space in between your hand and the battlefield where your opponent may counter or react to your actions. We sympathise that context is important and on our opponent'south plough, nosotros can simply really cast Instants or use Activated Abilities in response to what is currently on the Stack. Seems simple enough, and so allow's make it more than complicated.
How the Stack Works
Let's say I bandage Lurrus the Dream Den. Information technology's now first in the Stack. Priority passes to you.
Yous bandage Drown of the Loch. Both of its options crave me to have at least 3 cards in my graveyard since that is Lurrus' converted mana price. Since Lurrus is not on the battlefield nevertheless, it tin't be destroyed. Therefore the only option is to counter the spell. Priority passes dorsum to me.
Luckily for me, ane of those graveyard cards is Cling to Grit. In response to your Drown of the Loch, I cast Cling to Dust for its escape toll, forcing me to exile v cards from my graveyard. The card itself exiles a card from my graveyard. Since my graveyard no longer has at to the lowest degree three cards in it, Drown of the Loch does nil against Lurrus the Dream-Den, as it completes its journey to the battleground.
However, now that there is nil in my graveyard, Lurrus is less of a threat to you, either fashion.
Why Is the Stack important?
The Stack helps create a arrangement in which the cards resolve, preventing bug and creating smooth gameplay. It doesn't always work out that way. There is many a Reddit tale about complicated Stack combinations and questions on how to resolve Stack bug. All that means is, even the most expert of adept players in Magic: The Gatheringwill pop a question onto Reddit or Twitter about a Stack resolving issue or a card combination. It tin can be confusing no matter where you are in your MTG journey. New expansions mean new abilities to acquire and new Stack mechanics to figure out.
Don't let something like the Stack intimidate you from something you want to endeavor. Exercise cheque out how to play Magic: The Gathering for free, so yous can play around with how different card combinations will resolve. Do have lots of fun and come hang out on Mondays and Fridays over on my Twitch.tv channel to see some MTG Arena in action.
